When @ Home…

The following learning can be completed by children who are unable to attend school due to covid symptoms, but are otherwise well enough to continue with their studies.

Please ensure that you complete learning for the day (see ‘Learning @ Home’ BEFORE completing learning from this page.

As always, if you need any support with the home learning, you can contact the Year 6 team on the Year 6 email address; please bear in mind that we are teaching – we will get back to you as soon as possible ( year6info@bpa.cabot.ac.uk)

Reading

The very best thing you can do to help move your learning forwards and to escape to a different world is to do lots of reading. Reading anything – fiction, non-fiction, magazines or even subtitles on the TV!  Find out your reading passion: everyone … yes EVERYONE can find one!!!

If you would like something new to read, check out:

  • Oxford Owl – Here, there is a huge library of e-books you can read. You can search by book level, age range or book type!
  • The Borrow Box App – Here, you can sign up to a library (for free!) and borrow E-Books!  It is awesome and Miss Sanders LOVES the selection that they have.  There are even audiobooks for you to borrow!!!

Reading Comprehension

A really important part of reading is comprehension (understanding what you’ve read).

Every time you’re reading, try answering these questions:

  1. Who is the main character?
  2. Where is the story set? How do you know?
  3. What do you think will happen next?
  4. Which is your favourite/worst/funniest/scariest part of the story? Why?
  5. Tell me three things you have learnt from the text.
  6. Find the part where…
  7. What is the dilemma in the story?
  8. Can you retell the story in 4 sentences or fewer?

Unit

Below is a list of suggested activities which can be completed in conjunction with one of our Knowledge Organisers (go to the Knowledge Organiser section under ‘Learning’ to find this). You may choose the Knowledge Organiser for our current unit or even choose an earlier unit to revise and/or improve fluency.

With the Knowledge Organiser you could:

  • Practise spelling each of the key vocabulary words.
  • Use the key vocabulary words to practise your handwriting.
  • Write each of the key vocabulary words in a sentence.
  • Research to build on your knowledge. Create a fact-file of this if you wish.
  • Write an explanatory paragraph/text about an area of the unit.

Maths

While you are at home, it is a really good time to develop your fluency and to revisit previous learning to develop your understanding.  Check out our Year 6 Maths Playlist on our YouTube channel here.

Practise times tables every day – these are vital in Year 6 AND throughout your life!  You can use the PiXL app for this or you may like to do this in a different way.  We would love to hear of any innovative ways that you have found to practise these!  Could you make a game?!

Other maths games and activities:

Corbett Maths Primary for a range of daily fluency and reasoning activities

Nrich for open-ended challenges and games

Top Marks for a wide variety of games

Writing

  • The Literacy Shed has some fantastic short films with a variety of writing activities.
  • Pobble365 has a new interesting picture every day with lots of different prompts, including story starters, sentence doctors and questions.
  • Practising your Cursive Handwriting is really simple for you to do at home and is invaluable.  Do ten minutes of your best, joined handwriting every day!  You could practise the Year 5/6 word list, some vocabulary from our unit or you could even look up some ambitious vocabulary to practise (use a dictionary)!
